A sound comparison could be made with RAK F AEGIS which was also a huge hit for PETA based on the music of Pinoy rock legends AEGIS. Story and music wise, however, this is a better fit. RAK had their own big stars in Aicelle Santos, Jerald Napoles BOTH of which have become GMA Network stars. RAK also had a long run attracting huge audiences.

All Star CAST

This time lead stars Anna Luna, Nicole Omillo (in the role of Basha) and Sam Concepcion, CJ Navato (for Popoy), have led us into the modern (and realistic) love story that is ONE MORE CHANCE. Although, every cast member could be, should be a star. The storyline lends itself to it as each of the major characters have their own back story. That builds on or affects the main love story of Popoy and Basha.

Each cast member shows their strength. Everyone had their moment. Whoever I haven’t specifically described or mentioned here I ask for forgiveness. I was only able to see one group of cast (with Anna Luna, Sam Concepcion and Jef Flores). Obviously, every single person on stage and off, outdid themselves. Anna, Sam and Sheena

Anna Luna shines in the dramatic portions (not unlike Bea Alonzo). Very easily convinces you of the emotional vulnerabilities of Basha. Recently, ‘She was awarded Best Actress in the Philadelphia Independent Film Awards for the film MAESTRA, Best Supporting Actress in the Cinema One Originals for BENDOR, and the ToFarm Film Festival for PAGLIPAY.’ From: ONE MORE CHANCE The Musical Play Bill. Luna may very well win Best Actress awards for her portrayal of Basha.

Sam Concepcion is now more beefy and was able to show off his new bod in sex scenes. (UNLIKE John Lloyd who famously eschews working out) His hip hop dance background was shown when he did a handstand and somersault in the middle of the stage during one of the faster songs. Sam, however, retains that boyish charm John Lloyd has in the original.

The revelation for me was, Sheena Belarmino (Tricia) with her powerful vocals. Sheena may have had the best vocal debut in any musical I’ve seen. Maximizing her pipes, the character was introduced belting out as a singer in Karaoke. No wonder, she was cast with her background in TAWAG NG TANGHALANG KIDS and YOUR FACE SOUNDS FAMILIAR KIDS. But theater and acting have also come in early. Sheena is part of TABING ILOG The Musical, a collab between PETA and Star Magic.

Via, Poppert and Rica

Via Antonio is the wise cracking BFF Anj (originally played by Dimples Romana). Again, she’s not just a wise-ass. Anj has her own heart break story that she shares with Basha and Khrizzy.

Via plays both parts of the role well, scathing in most scenes and sensitive in others. She gets the best lines and laughs in the show. Unsurprisingly is a mental health counsellor/advocate in real life, the way she almost is to her onstage pals.

Poppert Bernadas may have had the most difficult role physically as Ken, the one in the barkada who has gone blind. He seems to be the friend everyone listens to. Poppert is a genuine triple threat having gone through the CCP show TRIPLE THREAT (for acclaimed dancers, singers and actors). He began his career handpicked by Mr. C for the Ryan Cayabyab Singers.

Rica Laguardia is a knockout beauty with her chinita looks and imposing height. Rica plays the kind, warm Krizzy married to Ken. While it’s her acting that shines here, she has an incredible vocal resumé. As former member of the Philippine Opera Company’s THE OPERA BELLES with Lara Maigue and Lena Mckenzie. The Opera Belles earned so many awards like Aliw Awardee for Ben Best New Female Group and Awit Awards. Rica made the vocal parts look easy. Lara Maigue on the other hand, was recently cast in ARDP’s CARMINA BURANA.

Jon and Johnnie

Jon Abella as the quiet, soft spoken JP managed to make the role great. By making us feel the yearning and even the acceptance of reality in unrequited love. You can see that Jon gives it his all no matter the role. We last saw him in the lead as Tenyong in WALANG ARAY. For which he earned Gawad Buhay award for OUTSTANDING MALE LEAD, Midyear Citations.

Johnnie Moran as Chinno is that quirky, comic relief pal the barkada chides for his ‘fake’ girlfriend. Moran has a long and storied experience in PETA most notably as Padre Damaso in WALANG ARAY. Watch out for a very brief cameo of Padre Damaso in ONE MORE CHANCE, that brought delight to fans of both shows. Jon Abella and Johnnie Moran steals the limelight for their heartfelt performances. Good indication of bigger and better roles ahead. Perhaps also in film and TV in the future.

Carla vs Raul

Again, the whole cast deserves an ensemble award. An unforgettable performance was the lovey dovey (and incredibly loud) OFW couple Edith and Bert. Played by Carla Guevara-Laforteza and Raul Montesa respectively. She may have channeled one of her famous roles as Kate Monster and Lucy The Slut from AVENUE Q. The rich couple here have their share of ‘sex’ scenes.

Carla managed to convince audiences she’s a genuine Illongga, with her use of the language. Laying the accent thick. You’d think the portrayal was over the top until you realize the late great Nanette Inventor played the same role to the same comedic heights. BOTH Carla and Bert had dual roles, not easy to do as Basha’s mom Rose and the demanding boss Willie. Raul shows incredible versatility, one scene he’s ravishing Edith, the other he’s a strict and gay boss Willie. A spinoff sitcom with Edith, Bert, JP and Chinno is a viable proposal.

Self-Care

The story however, isn’t just all laughs. The journey of Basha for self-care was told, way back when fewer people were aware of it in 2007. So ONE MORE CHANCE originally written by Vanessa R. Valdez and Carmi Raymundo (screenplay) and directed by Cathy Garcia-Sampana was way ahead of its time. Cementing both the dramatic and comedic acting reputations of John Lloyd Cruz (Popoy) and Bea Alonzo (Basha). Bea and John Lloyd were the original Popoy and Basha the world fell in love with. Not just Filipinos as the now classic can be viewed on NETFLIX and Star Magic’s YT channel.

Ben&Ben’s music of self-realization and mental health themes were perfect for the musical. Some of the songs dealing with depression and isolation after COVID years gave me the impression they were written FOR the musical. MAGPAHINGA for example was written after Paolo Benjamin’s sister became COVID positive and was able to push through it.

Incidentally, just a corner or two away from the PETA Theater Center is Robinsons Magnolia. That is where the iconic music video: OUR FAVORITE PLACE by Ben&Ben was shot. Stage Projections

Transitions between scenes were replaced by video chats splashed above the stage via projector. The video projections push the story forward, in a contemporary way. Who hasn’t been in a video conference? Or video chat? And updates the OMC storyline to the current reality. Audiences can fully relate to it. Literally More Moving Parts

The musical is far more complex compared to the movie. There are literally more moving parts: the music element, staging, sets, choreography etc. They added a few lines of dialogue too adding humor or drama.

While the musical is definitely more entertaining, the romantic chemistry on film (with Bea and John Lloyd), can’t be duplicated. Not just because of the actors, but rather the intimacy of close ups on screen. Their whole face occupies the screen or both of their faces. Facial expressions are magnified tenfold. That brings you in emotionally, as a viewer. Stage, can be intimate too in a different way. So how do you replicate that on stage? That’s just one of the challenges they overcame.
